Spruce Pine, NC – April 25, 2025
At 35 years old, Private Joshua Vaughan stands as a powerful testament to courage, resilience, and unwavering faith. Born with a calling to serve, Joshua embarked on his journey into the U.S. Army immediately after high school, driven by a deep sense of duty that had guided him from a young age. A Calling to Serve
In May 2008, Joshua left for basic training at the then-named Fort Benning in Georgia (now Fort Moore). His goal was to become a military police officer, but a turn of fate steered him into the infantry—a decision that would shape his life in unimaginable ways.
Joshua recalls the intensity of the infamous “shark attack” drill during basic training—a moment filled with doubt, but also the determination that saw him through. He completed 17 weeks of grueling One Station Unit Training (OSUT), culminating in his graduation on September 11, 2008—a date etched into the hearts of Americans.
A Journey of Sacrifice
Joshua’s service led him to Fort Hood in Texas (now Fort Cavazos), where he became part of a pioneering unit conducting air assaults in Iraq. In 2009, Joshua was deployed to Iraq, facing the harsh realities of combat.
In January 2010, his life changed forever when an improvised explosive device (IED) injured him during a routine mission. Doctors told him he would never walk again—but Joshua’s indomitable spirit defied the odds. Through sheer determination, faith, and the grace of God, he walked out of the hospital, proving that miracles do happen.
Resilience in the Face of Adversity
Life after the military has not been easy for Joshua. Though he now uses a wheelchair, he continues to radiate positivity and resilience, crediting his unwavering faith in God and his savior, Jesus, for guiding him through life’s many trials.
A New Challenge: Hurricane Helene
Recently, Hurricane Helene devastated Spruce Pine, NC, including Joshua’s home. His roof suffered significant damage, leaving him vulnerable. Despite his efforts to seek assistance, his insurance provider denied coverage for the necessary repairs. The compromised roof now poses risks to Joshua’s safety, especially considering his medical needs.
Joshua’s story is not just about his own challenges—it’s a reminder of the sacrifices our veterans make and how important it is for communities to rally around them in times of need.

A Personal Nomination for Joshua Vaughan
I am writing to nominate Joshua Vaughan, a dedicated disabled veteran, for a free roof replacement through your generous program. Joshua served our country in Iraq and sustained injuries that have left him wheelchair-bound since 2010. His commitment to our nation and the sacrifices he has made are truly commendable.
Recently, Joshua's home suffered significant damage due to Hurricane Helene. Despite his efforts to seek assistance, his insurance provider has unfortunately denied coverage for the necessary repairs. This has left him in a difficult situation, struggling with a compromised roof that poses risks to his safety and well-being.
The areas of concern on his roof are not just cosmetic; they could lead to further damage and increase the challenges Joshua faces in his daily life. A reliable and safe roof is essential for his comfort and security, especially considering his medical needs.
Providing Joshua with a new roof would not only alleviate his current stress but also honor his service and commitment to our country. It would be a remarkable way to show appreciation for the sacrifices he has made for our freedom.
Thank you for considering this nomination for Joshua Vaughan. I hope you will help him regain a sense of stability and safety in his home. Join the Mission
